Lighting

Tungsten lights are used within the CDes Imaging Lab's studio to produce both direct and indirect lighting for shooting models and flat work.

The lab's lights use 3200 degree Kelvin tungsten halogen bulbs and have a different color temperature than regular ambient light. The lab recommends using a tungsten balanced slide film such as Kodak's Ektachrome 160 or 64 for best results when shooting in the studio. Daylight-balanced color films need an 80B, blue filter to remove the red-yellow color produced by tungsten lights and are available within the lab for use on lenses threaded at 49, 52 and 55mm.

Tungsten balanced slide film is sold within the Imaging Lab for student's conveniance but both tungsten film and 80B filters are relativly inexpensive and are available for purchase at most photography stores if student's prefer to bring their own.

Because continuous tungsten lighting allows users to better preview the effects of various lighting techniques, the Imaging Lab does not provide electronic flash equipment for checkout or use within the studio.
