Digital Services

Scanners and workstations

The CDes Imaging Lab is equipped with one Nikon 35mm slide/negative scanner and one 11"x17" Agfa flatbed scanner for digitizing CDes coursework. Both scanners are attached to Macintosh workstations and are equipped with floppy and 100Mb Zip drives as well as network connections for transferring files.

A G4 Macintosh workstation with iMovie and Premiere 6 is located in the Imaging Lab for importing and working with digital video via Firewire. The G4 has smart media, compact flash, and Sony memory stick card readers for downloading images and a CD/DVD drive for transferring work onto disc. This unit is also equipped with USB and Firewire ports, a Zip 250Mb drive and network connections for transferring files.

One Macintosh workstation is configured for video capture and recording of images to and from video camcorders and also has a 35mm film recorder attached for transferring digital images back to 35mm slide film. Use of the video capture and recording workstation must be reserved in advance with lab management.

Two Dell PC units with CD reader/writer, Zip 250Mb, and floppy drives are available in the Imaging Lab for work on images. Both units are equipped with Adobe PageMaker and PhotoShop and are networked to the CDes servers.

An analog video (VHS) editing suite is located in the lab for use by CDes students, faculty, and staff. A recording deck that can transfer mini DV tapes onto VHS is also available. Both of these workstations must be reserved in advance with lab management.

An OCE large format copy machine is available for making same size, black-and-white copies of drawings 16 inches or longer on bond roll paper 24 or 36 inches wide. The toner-based copier is also capable of printing on other media such as drafting Mylar or vellum, maximum 36 inches wide. All alternative media must be approved and loaded by an Imaging Lab attendant before use in the OCE copier.

Laptop and LCD projectors

The Imaging Lab has one Dell Inspiron 5000 laptop and one Macintosh iBook with a 10Gb portable Firewire hardrive available for checkout from the lab. Both laptops have a 250Mb Zip drive and a network card available upon request. Software on the computers includes: Adobe PhotoShop, PageMaker, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Access and Excel.

The lab also has two portable LCD data projectors available to checkout for digital presentations of CDes coursework, special presentations, and for teaching usage.

All LCD and laptop reservations must be made in advance with lab management by the faculty or staff member who wishes to use the equipment. Students can not checkout LCD or laptop equipment from the lab without a faculty member present. Faculty members are responsible for reserving all equipment and must have signed and filed a LCD/Laptop reservation form with the lab. LCD/Laptop reservation forms are available directly from the lab or can be downloaded from the Imaging Lab Web site. Faculty may designate a TA to pickup and return equipment, but it is the faculty member themselves who is responsible for the proper setup, safekeeping, and return of all the equipment checked out.

LCDs and laptops are under very heavy usage throughout the semester, so we recommend that users make reservations with lab management as far in advance as possible to ensure availability. Please see lab management if there are any questions concerning LCD and laptop checkouts (see LCD/Laptop Check Out Policy) or if special arrangements are necessary to accommodate your needs.

Note: During periods of heavy use, reservation times on the equipment may be limited to two hours per person. Check with lab staff for more information.
