Transfer Coursework and Credit

What are transfer credits?

Transfer credits consist of any college or university (or Advanced Placement) credits that you earned before being admitted to a degree program at the U of M. In order for the U of M to transfer in your credits and add them to your U of M student record, the U of M Office of Admissions needs to have received an official transcript listing all transfer credits and grades.

High School PSEO, CIS, IB and AP Credits

AP = Advanced Placement
CIS = College in the Schools
IS = International Baccalaureate
PSEO = Post-Secondary Enrollment Option

Your PSEO, CIS and IB courses and credits from AP tests are considered transfer credits. In order for them to show on your U of M record, you need to send to the U of M Admissions Office an official transcript or document listing these courses, grades and credits.  Note: U of M PSEO and CIS courses will automatically appear on your U of M transcript.

Prior Baccalaureate Degree

If you are admitted to a U of M degree-seeking program after having finished a prior baccalaureate degree at an accredited college or institution, all U of M-Twin Cities liberal education requirements are waived! You are also exempt from all writing requirements in your major, including Rhet 1101, 1223, and 3562W.

Minnesota Transfer Curriculum

If you are a transfer student from a public Minnesota post-secondary (after high school) institution, you may be exempt from some of the U of M-Twin Cities liberal education requirements.

  • If you have completed the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MNTC) before entering CDes, you are exempt from the diversified core, designated themes, and the freshman composition requirement, as well as Rhet 1223.
  • If you have completed an associate in arts (A.A.) degree at a Minnesota community college, you are exempt from the diversified core, freshman composition requirement, and Rhet 1223. (Four-year colleges that grant two-year A.A. degrees do not qualify for this exemption.)

How long does it take to process your transfer credits?

It can take up to two months for the U of M to process official transcripts and place transfer credits on your U of M student record. If your transfer credits have not yet appeared, ask yourself, "when did my past college send my official transcript(s) to the U of M, and how current is the transcript that they sent?"  If you finished the MNTC or a Minnesota A.A. degree, did your transcript have the appropriate degree completion certification on it? To find out what transcript(s) the U of M has received, call the Admissions Office at 612-625-2008.

Your transfer credits show up on your...

  • Transfer Course Evaluation/Report:  the official list of processed transfer credits (The U of M Office of Admissions sends one to you, and you will also receive a more current one at orientation.)
  • APAS Report: a report that shows where your credits have been applied toward your liberal education and/or major requirements.  You can view you own APAS.
  • U of M Transcript (Your transfer credits will be listed as total credits only; individual courses and grades will not appear execpt in the case of U of M PSEO and College in the Schools.  The number of transfer credits will be figured into your total number of completed credits, but your grades will NOT be factored into your U of M grade point average.
